We all need happiness and fulfillment in our life. But how do we find it?
New Situations
Perhaps it is the refreshing influx of new people, situations, energies and interactions that enhance and brighten our life – making all things crisp and lively again. At least for a while.
Some are Naturally Vibrant
Then, there are those who naturally connect with that fountain of bubbly vibrancy in their bond with life and the Divine (God), spreading their liveliness to everyone they meet.
They dwell in happiness and fulfillment.
Life Activities
While others find these two qualities through pursuits that resonate with their life — the ideal job that reflects exactly who they are, doing mission work, creating art or music, pursuing their own brand of spiritual activities, or engaging in philanthropy if positioned to do so. For them, the avenues are both obvious and numerous.
These people find happiness and fulfillment by engaging in those things that satisfy and even enthrall them. They do not permit the grasses of inactivity to grow beneath their feet. They’re mowing down life by doing what makes their heart sing, no matter the activity.
What makes the people in these two groups different from the rest of us? Well, let’s see.
My Friend – The Perfect Example
My friend is a perfect illustration of this point. He has a unique outlook on things – that is, most everything.
First of all, he lives neither in affluence nor poverty. He’s doing fine. In fact, he is always doing fine, which is perplexing to those who know his life situation. They wonder, how can he be satisfied, happy and fulfilled with his life as it is?
The answer is quite simple, yet elusive for most people.
Chooses Activities
First, he chooses to do those things he enjoys, that make him feel happy and bring him fulfillment – regardless of what others may think [of him]. He opts to be fully engaged and completely pleased with whatever activity is at hand, whether doing something plain and simple or engrossed in a new, exciting one.
Others would be bored if they lived his lifestyle, yet he is uplifting and bright. What is different about him?
Telephone Conversation Answered the Question
Our recent phone conversation answered that question.
We talked about how all kinds of things happened to him over the years – quitting a much-needed job that he didn’t like, a truck completely breaking down on an important road trip, other economic upheavals as well as the recent pandemic.
Solutions Appear out of Nowhere
No sooner did some unfortunate event happen to him than a solution magically appeared. Sometimes it came in the form of a novel idea and other times good fortune appeared to just fall into his lap (making everyone he knew wonder how that happened to him… again).
During the road trip where his truck permanently broke down, a used car sales dealership that was located close to the very next interstate exit, had a quality used truck at a very good deal. He immediately bought it and was on his way.
New Occupation Appeared
When he quit his job, soon after it came to him that he could sell used books online. He immediately acted upon this idea without second guessing it. Before long, he identified sources for used books and a good web presence to sell them online. He still does this business now, although he senses change is coming.
He told me that he’s not worried because he knows he will be shown what to do next.
I could cite numerous other unexpected events that have happened to him over the years, all of which were solved without his ever having to be fearful.
Solutions just appeared out of nowhere.
During that phone conversation I mentioned earlier, he told me how he knows and trusts that his higher guidance and the Universe will take care of him in any situation and show him what to do next.
And, sure enough, it does.
He Chooses to be Content in Life
He chooses to be fully engaged and fulfilled in whatever comes his way, and does not self-sabotage by questioning what he is guided to do at the time, or doubting an unlikely solution or good fortune.
In life, he elects to be satisfied and content in whatever his situation, good or bad.
Finding Happiness and Fulfillment
In the beginning of this writing I mentioned that there are people who feel happy and fulfilled because they were either naturally wired that way or because they engaged in activities that brought them happiness and fulfillment.
But it was my friend who made me realize that it was neither of these things that made them that way.
They merely choose to be happy and fulfilled the vast majority of the time, leaving others to ponder the reason.
They live in an attitude of abundance when others would be ungrateful, and trust that good and abundant solutions will come their way… and abundance does!
That is the realization that came to me after our conversation.
Matt Kahn wrote a book some years ago titled, “Whatever Arises, Love That.” When we do, we open ourselves to have love, happiness and fulfillment come our way.
That seems like good advice.
